Going To the Family Court
At Farrar Gesini Dunn we fight to protect your interests and get the best outcome for you.
Our Sydney family lawyers attend the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court on a regular basis for family law matters, as well as appearing in the Magistrates Court, Supreme Court and Children’s Court in a number of jurisdictions.
Going to Court in Sydney
There are two registries in the Sydney metropolitan region where your matter may be heard should it be litigated.
Family Court of Australia, Sydney and the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, Sydney.
The largest Court registry is located in the Lionel Bowen Building, 97-99 Goulburn Street, Sydney, which is situated a short distance from Central Station, Museum Station and from Town Hall. If you are traveling by train, we recommend that you alight at Museum Station as it is the train station most proximate to the Court.
There are numerous hotels that are located around the Family and Federal Circuit Court Registry given that it is centrally located in the Sydney CBD. Proximate to the Court are the following hotels:
Meriton Apartments (Campbell Street, Pitt St, and also Kent St locations);
The Vibe Hotel;
Pullman Hyde Park; and
Sheraton Hotel Sydney
Unfortunately, there are long delays in the Sydney Family Law Registry and it often takes in excess of three to four months from filing an Application before your matter is heard before a Judge or a Registrar.
Parramatta Family Court of Australia and Federal Circuit Court
The second location in which family law matters are heard in the Sydney metropolitan region is in Parramatta at the Federal Circuit Court of Australia and Family Court of Australia registry situated at the Garfield Barwick Commonwealth Law Courts Building, 1-3 George Street Parramatta NSW 2150. The Parramatta Registry has shorter wait times to have your matter heard, however it is a smaller Registry than that of the Registry located in the Sydney CBD.
There are regional locations where the Family Court of Australia and Federal Circuit Court of Australia sits in NSW and the Honorable Justice Austin and the Honorable Justice Cleary both sit in the Newcastle Registry of the Family Court of Australia.
The Federal Circuit Court of Australia does have regional sittings as there are Judicial Officers who travel to Courts in Wagga Wagga, Wauchope, Orange, Lismore, Dubbo, Coffs Harbour, Broken Hill, Armidale and Albury. The Family Court of Australia has sitting locations in Coffs Harbour, Lismore, Albury, Dubbo and Wollongong.
